Private Patrick Stafford. Born in Tipperary, Ireland. Had previously served in the Connaught Rangers for 6 and half years – discharged 31 January 1910 when time expired. He enlisted with The Royal Irish 1 January 1898 at Longford. Service in India from 27 October 1899 although it is unknown how long he was overseas.
Attested for the Army Reserve 1 February 1910. Lived at Crossheys in Longford at this time. Discharged from the reserve 31 January 1914 after 4 years service.
He was 41 years and 174 days when he attested 7 September 1914. He lived on Devonshire Lane, Sheffield. Medical same day. Height 5 feet 10 and a half inches. Weight 163 pounds. Chest 40 to 42 inches. Brown eyes and hair. Scar on left calf of his leg. Religion Roman Catholic. Posted and in France from 30 November 1914 to 4 April 1915. Married Elizabeth Thompson, a widow, 12 June 1915 in Sheffield. Elizabeth had 4 surviving children (from 5). Attached to Reserve Training Battalion at Ottley October 1916. Promoted to Corporal at some stage in this service. Discharged as physically unfit for service 9 July 1917. Reasons given were Frost bite and trench foot caused by previous active service overseas. Character descibed as very good. Address on discharge 36 Chester Street, Sheffield. Awarded Silver War Badge No. 329.095 12 February 1918.
